Zero, Zen, and the Free Hood Update

The popular modular jacket from A Year of Zero Waste Sewing now has an option for a hood.

The update is free but you’ll need the original pattern, which is still available as a zine (ie booklet) for a very modest sum, or in A Year of Zero Waste Sewing. The pattern is the same in both, but the book includes how to add a lining.

The hood instructions print out on a single sheet of paper, double sided, to be folded in half like the zine.

To go with it, there’s a 13 minute sew-a-long video.

The hood extends down the front of the jacket, giving a wider wrap over.
It looks good worn open; the edges of the hood look like a shawl collar.
Here’s a back view with the hood down.
It was wildly windy when I took these photos!

I’ve also made this pattern as a dressing gown for my teen, who’s the same size as me. It’s full length.

I maintain that the key to getting out of bed in winter is a warm dressing gown!

She told me that with the hood up I looked like Palpatine (from Star Wars – he’s old and the most evil person in the universe) and then hurriedly added that that was a compliment, as when he was Senator Palpatine he wore beautiful clothes. Hmmm…..

Zero and Zen

All this is just in time for Zero and Zen, a course I’m presenting with artist Kate Ward of Zen Stitching (she’s the “Zen”, I’m the “Zero”). Zero and Zen combines making the modular jacket with Sashiko embroidery.

The course starts on October 4th and goes for five weeks. The cost is US$147. Read more and enroll here.

If you’d like to make a modular jacket along with a fun community, or maybe get started with Sashiko or the jacket and want some hand-holding, this is for you.

I’m going to be making a jacket and adding Sashiko along with the course. In fact, I’ve already started. The jacket is the grey one in this blog post. Yes, it looks like the jacket is all finished, but some of it is only pinned or basted so I could undo it to make stitching easier.

I’m doing glorious orange stitching!

I’ve laid out my grid to start stitching.

When the stitching is done I’m planning to add diagonal welt pockets and a lining.

So, I’ll be sharing the Sashiko jacket progress in the coming weeks on this blog.

Cheers!

Is there a step 2 on page ii?

Gah! It’s a typo! I’ve just gone in and fixed it. Sorry about that, and thanks for saying something.

I love your drawings, and I love how you consider and include different options!

Thanks Enui 🙂 I wish I’d thought of this option when I did it originally, but maybe it’s better this way.

Thanks for the update! A hood will be a nice addition for the next ZW jacket I make.
