Red Trousers Go With…

The red trousers from last week’s book review of Sewing with Scraps have been successfully worked into my wardrobe.

It wasn’t too difficult – they go with so many things. If you’re contemplating red trousers, here are some ways to wear them.

1. Any print with red in it

Any print with even a tiny bit of red in it will work. If you’re a floral shirt wearer, it’s easy to find prints with red in them.

2. Green, but make it olive

One of the classic blunders is to put red trousers with a green top and end up looking too Christmassy, as Julie “elf on the shelf” identified in last week’s comments.

But by changing the shade of green to olive, or greens with a woody tone, the mood of the outfit shifts entirely.

…unless of course, it is in fact Christmas and you’re looking for an outfit to wear to that pre-Christmas family BBQ, the kind where novelty earrings and tinsel accessories are expected. If you’re in the northern hemisphere, swap out the t-shirt for a green sweater with reindeer and snowflakes.

Yeah, an unfortunate t-shirt logo for Christmas, but you get the idea.

3. Red, white and blue combos

Red, white and blue ensembles always looks fresh, and the red part is already taken care of.

The top is Emily Klug’s bias shift top, with vintage baseball cap and sneakers.

For a change, swap out any of the colours for a different shade. For example, swap the white for cream, or the blue for teal.

4. Any neutral

Amplify the red against a background of neutrals, such as black, white, grey, cream, beige or brown.

5. Mustard yellow

Be that person who brightens everyone’s day with colour.

Bright yellows and golds can be too “Lego” with red, but deeper shades such as mustard bring a (relative) subtlety.

6. Pink, the surprise

Pink isn’t worn with red as much as other colours, but a pale pink top is surprisingly versatile, sometime more than a plain white one. Very fine red and white stripes can also read as pale pink.

    Nice pants, nice color inspirations!

I have two bright red pants note quite the same shade and the one that looks more like yours I also wear a lot with black, yellow or orange-yellow, grey, white and light blue (it’s like pink, good surprise). Living in France, the trio red-white-blue makes me feel like a living flag…

My other pair is red pulling toward the blue and works with “autumn colors” (dark green, dark orange, teal, darker blue, black, white).

I always find it funny how a slight change in tone makes the cloth totally impossible to wear with most of one’s wardrobe or on the contrary so versatile!

Thanks Liseli. You have made a good point about the particular shade of red. I think mine is more of a “Summer-y” shade of red. I must try light blue with it, thank you for the idea.

Another interesting point on shades of red: colours can look slightly different in different countries. Here in Australia, the bright white Aussie sunshine tends to drain colours making them look washed out, but in England, France and countries with similar weather, the colours appear brighter. I remember fashion buyers commenting on it, when they imported clothes to Australia.

That’s interesting! I knew that with the bright sun, we end up damaging or cornea and therefore loose sensivility to blue colour but I didn’t think about the general fact that having lots of sun makes your eye less sensitive to colours in general… even though it makes complete sense.

That’s ’The Craft of Clothes’ annual Christmas party outfit sorted then!
And ‘looking like Lego’ neatly side-stepped.

Thank you Wendy, I plan to wear them for that:)
I’m a bit aware of Lego colours lately, after my Lego-shop-owning sibling looked at my Me Made May photos and commented that I wore a lot of Lego colours – and even quoted the names of the Lego colours, current and discontinued! Apparently Lego’s colour palette is a big thing in the Lego world.
