5 Ways to Wear a Beret

The Louvre Beret is a low or zero waste pattern, first published in TAUKO magazine last year.

The copyright has now reverted to me, and the pattern is now in my shop. Please enjoy 25% off for the next month.

Louvre has a YouTube sewalong – in the first few minutes I give a little show and tell of berets.

You can read more about this pattern here, and read about the behind-the-scenes process of a magazine here.

Are you a beret lover? Here’s some ways to wear a beret…

1. The Winter Classic

Coat, scarf and beret = very smart winter look.

Experiment with how to wear your hair underneath. Sometimes it looks better to have your hair tucked behind your ears, sometimes not. If you have a fringe/bangs, decide whether to wear the beret over the top, or on a bare forehead.

Worn with a coat cut from a blanket (the modular jacket from A Year of Zero Waste Sewing).
Gah, it was SO hot when I took this photo – below the coat I’m in shorts.

2. All Denim

Doing head-to-toe denim? Consider a beret as part of the ensemble.

The denims could match, as mine does, or a beret could be cut from old, soft denim.

Worn with the Optimatium dress (coat version), coincidentally another TAUKO pattern.

3. Reversible for Traveling

Same coat and beret as above, but the beret is reversible, giving two hats in one. The inner fabric is Prince of Wales check. If you’re planning a travel clothes capsule, anything reversible will extend your outfit combos – ideally every item of clothing should be able to combine with everything else.

A beret is also great if you’re traveling and can’t wash your hair, because it looks okay if you keep it on indoors, whereas sunhats and beanies tend not to.

Sharp-eyed readers will notice my zipper earrings!

4. Add a Brooch for Evening Wear

A beret made of richly coloured fabric can be worn to evening events, with a brooch on the beret rather than the lapel.

It feels a bit insensitive wearing diamonds with a beret named Louvre, however I wasn’t anywhere near Paris last October.

The dress is the Lillypilly dress, and the brooch is a cool find from an op shop, pre-heist.

5. Linen Beret for Spring

Berets aren’t just for cold weather; in linen they can be worn with a springtime outfit.

The overalls are the Smith pinafore.

Happy beret wearing!

I had a good laugh about the diamonds on the Louvre Beret 😀
By the way, why Louvre? Because of the triangles on the pyramid?
And no, I’m definitely not a beret wearer…

Yes, the triangles on the Louvre pyramid look very similar to the cutting layout (but completely different to the finished beret!).
