Two Crowns of Splendour

The final part of my Me Made May pledge has been fulfilled. It was to finish 3 UFOs (UnFinished Objects). One (pinafore) was finished and worn during May, and for the others I’ve just finished off two sunhats. We’re now into winter but I’m sure they’ll get worn.

Both the sunhats were crownless, and both are from the low-waste sunhat pattern.

Crazy looking pattern, hey? The crown pattern is on the right – the outer and lining nest into one another.

The yellow one was used to (successfully) trial crownless sunhat options, for those blessed with voluminous hair.

However, I cannot wear a crownless sunhat – thin hair, fair skin and the hot Aussie sun is a sure recipe for a sunburnt scalp. I hate to waste a good brim, though!

The orange one was the first brim I made when I was developing this pattern, but it didn’t have enough “spread” and was deemed too lamp-shade like. When worn, the back of the hat’s brim touched the shoulders and to view straight ahead you had to tip your head back! (scroll down to the end and you’ll see what I mean). I thought it could be redeemed as a bucket hat though, if I added a crown and trimmed the brim.

There was no more fabric for either, so I dispatched Mr H and younger teen to the fabric shop with the brims, and they they came back with some plain orange and yellow homespun.

From that I cut out a new crown + lining for each.

Then it was all straightforward sewing.

I had the finished hats lying around in the kitchen, where I sew, and last night I thought I’d trim down the orange hat to bucket brim length. However, I was stopped by older teen who tried both hats on, looked fabulous in them, claimed them, and said the orange hat was perfect as-is. So I saved myself the trouble of the orange brim! A very happy ending.

Cheers!

Hello Liz! Well done!!! They both look fab and your teen sure is lucky to be able to claim them❤️❤️ Now I really must sew some up too (I know I know you‘ve seen this before…) My fantastic version from last year is hiding…probably wants some friends to hang out with? I know I‘ll wear them, I have the fabric…so…let‘s go! Ok I pledge by the end of June to have two ready! Best, Giuls PS and your zero waste Belt bag is also asking for my attention…Hasn‘t been forgotten…

Many thanks Giuls 🙂 I cannot judge – I had the orange brim sitting by the sewing machine for well over a year!

Such collaboration! Sending others to the fabric shop!! That was brave – although I understand your need to stay put. And elder daughter stepping in to declare no need for brim surgery; bonus.
Well done Liz. Polish your Me Made May halo (although that is probably in need of a crown…)

Yes, it has been a bit of a Haywood collab, and worked out very well. I usually phone ahead if Mr H goes to the fabric shop, and my “woman on the ground” gets things out before he arrives, but this time he and teen went off with only the brims and instructions to buy anything matching.

You’ve really well trained your family! I wouldn’t bet on the color that would come back from the store at my place… 😀
This is for sure a very happy end, congratulation for finishing all these UFOS, says she who has to go back to her own pile (destocked a few thanks to your last posts, thanks for putting up the topic).

They were very kind to go and even though they reported “not a lot of choice” they chose well 🙂

I love this especially the surprise ending when you were done even though you had more work planned! Love it and ALWAYS great for that to happen because someone loves your work as-is.

I didn’t see that ending coming either, but I’m not complaining!
