Making a Spectacle of Oneself

Making a Spectacle of Oneself

They said it would happen one day, and now it finally has.

Yep, reading glasses.  I’ve now reached That Age where I need glasses to sew and read.

I can’t complain really; I’ve enjoyed superb eyesight my whole life.  In my 20’s I could actually read the size number on machine needles.  Since I turned 40 things have been heading downhill, and more so in the last 18 months (I blame sitting in front of a computer doing The Dressmaker’s Companion).

I sat in the waiting room at Specsavers, surrounded by huge clear photos of manly men with chiselled jaws and beautiful women with lovely teeth, all looking healthy and radient in their spectacles.  I felt rather intimidated by these larger-than-life, clear-skinned models hanging above my head.  Around me, ordinary mere-mortals like myself were waiting for their eye tests, trying on glasses and getting their frames tightened.  The staff were very friendly and really helpful.

I collected my new glasses last week, and when we got home I tried out their many moods…

I looked over the top of them at my children…

I sat in a swivel chair, swivelled around, and took them off thoughtfully as I posed a question…

Perched them on the end of my nose, on my forehead and then on my head to keep my hair back…

I tore them off my face as I jumped to my feet!  That’s absolutely outrageous!…

I held them, unfolded, in my hand as I paced up and down, gesticulating animatedly, debating rhetorical questions…

I listened intently to a conversation, leaning to one side with my glasses poised half on half off…

…then I wore them properly to sew press studs on barbie clothes (sigh).

Another good use for glasses is leaving them in your pocked with a piece of sandpaper.

Am I the only one left now without spectacles? I’m sure staring at a computer screen isn’t harmful.
